“I am standing by the window of a large house in the south of France as night falls, the night that will carry me into the most terrible morning of my life.”

Yesterday we saw a performance of ITA’s “Giovanni’s Room”, based on the groundbreaking novel of James Baldwin from 1956. After almost 70 years, the themes are still relevant. The play was sheer brilliance.

Actors were giving a stellar performance, especially Jesse Mensah as Giovanni, and Eelco Smits in the carrying role of David.

They all had perfect diction, without overdoing it. Assisted by sound support and (English) supertitles, I understood 99% of what was being said: very rare!

The acting was punctuated by poignant, ethereal music and singing.

The minimalistic staging was overwhelmingly effective.

Two hours went by in a flash. That’s entertainment.
